Trauma-Focused Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy

Trauma-Focused Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy, or TF-CBT, is a conjoint child and parent therapy approach for children and adolescents who are experiencing emotional and behavioral difficulties related to traumatic life events. It is a components-based treatment model that incorporates trauma-sensitive interventions with cognitive-behavioral, family, and humanistic principles and techniques.

In TF-CBT, children and parents learn new skills to help process thoughts and feelings related to traumatic life events, manage and resolve distressing thoughts, feelings, and behaviors related to traumatic life events, and enhance safety, growth, parenting skills and family communication.

TF-CBT has proved successful with children and adolescents having significant emotional problems such as symptoms of posttraumatic stress disorder, fear, anxiety, behavior problems or depression related to traumatic life experiences. This treatment can be used with children and adolescents who have experienced a single trauma or multiple traumas in their life. Those who are experiencing traumatic grief can also benefit.

TF-CBT is among the most effective treatment approaches for children who have symptoms related to trauma. Not only does TF-CBT assist with relief of symptoms at the present time, research shows that reductions in symptoms are long-lasting.

Clinicians at The Counseling Connection are trained in the practice of Trauma-Focused Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy and are here to assist you and your children.
